Brainerd High School Title I Parental Involvement Policy reflects federal and state guidelines and encourages the involvement of parents, to act as advisors and resource in the following ways:

  • To complement and extend the instructional services of the classroom teachers, by sharing specific talents;
  • To serve as committee members on curriculum development projects and site-based committees;
  • To express ideas and concerns by responding to surveys and other information gathering devices;
  • To be actively involved in parent-teacher groups, and PTA; and
  • To serve on citizens' advisory committees.

Brainerd High School will facilitate the planning and implementation of the Title I Program according to the guidelines set forth in law, which includes, but is not limited to, the following:

1. Parent input into the planning, design and implementation of the Title I Program will be accomplished by utilizing planned parent meetings each fall to review purpose, goals, and strategies to be used in the program, followed by on-going review throughout the academic year, and culminating with parents surveys and questionnaires to ascertain strengths and needs;

2. Consultation of parents of participating children in the planning, design, and implementation of the Title I Program will be accomplished during the year through planned and periodic meetings of parental involvement committees, scheduled parent training classes, and individual conference.

3. Systematic, on going, informed and timely consultation in relation to decisions about the program will be documented by notices, agendas, minutes, attendance, contact logs, and evaluations of meetings.

4. The activities and procedures will be of sufficient size, scope and quality to give reasonable promise of substantial progress toward achieving the required goals. Parent involvement will include parenting classes conducted in collaboration with the school guidance counselors, Title I staff and the community leaders. Parent/student learning compacts will be utilized in order to develop a partnership to help children achieve high standards.

To ensure that parents of participating children have an adequate opportunity to participate in the planning, designing, and implementation of the Title I Program, the school shall:
1. Convene an annual Open House meeting at the school site, to explain to all parents the programs, activities, and curriculum available under Title I.

  • Open House meetings will be scheduled each fall, to which all parents will be invited.
  • Documentation will be made through invitations, agenda, minutes, and follow-up evaluations from parents.

2. Provide parents with written mid-term and quarterly reports, as well as on-going conferences to address individual student needs through telephone and/or personal visits.

  • Written mid-term and quarterly reports will be sent to parents in addition to those sent by regular education staff. These will be in the form of checklists and narrative comments.
  • Personal conferences and telephone conferences will be on regular scheduled days as provided by the LEA, as well as conferences scheduled throughout the school year on an as-needed basis.
  • Personal visits will be conducted when needs arise that merit a home visit and may be conducted by the by staff or designated LEA personnel, as provided in the LEA and/or school policy.

3. Conduct parent-teacher conferences with parents to discuss child's progress and placement, but also to train in methods the parents can use to complement the child's instruction:

  • Multidisciplinary conferences may include the following at the school site: Title I staff, core, vocational or fine art teachers, guidance counselors, and principal.

4. Make educational personnel under the Title I program including student services, readily accessible to parents.

  • Collaboration of services from the school guidance counselors, the Family Resource Center coordinator, LEA and school site administrators.

5. Permit parents to observe Title I Program activities:

  • General and specific invitations to visit the classrooms through surveys, newsletters personal notes, and telephone contact.

6. Provide opportunities for regular meeting with parents to formulate input into the program.

  • Scheduled meetings no less than three per year to include a fall Open House, mid-year meeting and spring meeting to coincide with but not necessarily confined to scheduled Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings.

7. Provide parents with a copy of the parental involvement policy, as well as school policies and procedures.

  • Parents will date and sign agenda mates that will be distributed to every student. The agendas contain all pertinent information regarding the school.

8. Provide support for parental involvement activities as parents may request:

  • Survey parents at the beginning of the school year to ascertain their needs and desires for meeting schedules and/or parent involvement activities, and follow through on a timely basis in meeting those needs.

9. Develop a school-parent-student compact that outlines how parents, and the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve high standards:

  • Introduce the concept of parent compacts to administrators, faculty and staff via training sessions, individual conference, workshops, printed materials, and solicit commitment from parents and students.

10. Provide information to the extent practicable or programs and activities in a language and form that parents understand:

  • Survey parents to ascertain any needs for communication in a language other than English.
  • Solicit feedback from parents through an on-going program to ascertain their effectiveness of written and oral communications.

11. Annually assess through consultation with parents, the effectiveness of the parent involvement program, and determine what action, if any needs to be taken to increase parental participation.

  • Conduct an annual survey of the program, attempting to contact 75% of parents or more.
  • Compile results of the annual survey to use as a guideline to determine those aspects that are successful or to make adjustments for those that need to be changed.

Solicit input from parents on a consistent basis at meetings, through newsletters, and by personal contact.
